As I cross the finish line I feel relief and satisfaction. I have completes the task at hand. I have pushed my body to the limit and finished. I have succeeded.

But running is so much more than this. Running is a lifestyle, a community, a passion, and a way of life. Running is a life teacher and a facilitator of active living. Running is in me, outside of me, and all around me. I am a runner.

As my sight grows dim my vision is clearer than ever. I want to be an international success at running. I want to stand on the podium. I can see it so clearly, and feel it so intensely. I want to represent Canada at the highest level.

At first, losing my sight was a terrible tragedy, but with this tragedy came a passion for running that I would not have otherwise obtained. I am blessed to have found such a passion, and now is the time – the year – to put this all into action. This is the time to show what I am made of, and to excel. I was approached by the Canadian Paralympic Committee and asked to participate in an autograph signing at Major’s Hill Park on Canada Day to help promote awareness about Paralympic sport. Needless to say, I excitedly accepted. I am very proud to be a para-athlete and to represent our wonderful country. Only 3% of Canadians with a disability are physically active, so if I can work to help change that I will. Many people can become involved in para-sport even if they don’t have a disability; they can be officials, guides, volunteers – there is something for everybody. The more people we get involved, the greater the public knowledge and awareness of para-sport will become.

Because of my willingness to help my name was put forward and on June 28th I received a phone call inviting me to attend a VIP reception and barbeque dinner with The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge , Will and Kate. Alongside the honour of meeting Will and Kate, the Prime Minister, the Governor General, and other prestigious guests would be in attendance. I was beside myself. Without a moment of hesitation I accepted the invite to the Royal reception.

Following this invite was a day of media frenzy. It began with a morning interview on A Channel, followed by an interview on CBC News Now, the Ottawa Citizen, the Ottawa Sun, and Island morning. I was so honoured to be able to represent para-athletics? on behalf of the Canadian Paralympic Committee!

On June 30th I attended the Royal Dinner. Star struck, I nervously engaged in conversations with Will and Kate. I also had the subsequent honour of a great conversation with our Prime Minister, Steven Harper, and the Heritage Minister. What a great experience. Will and Kate are the epitome of a wonderful couple:down to earth, humorous, and gorgeous. It was an evening I will never forget.

On July 1st I partook in the autograph signing in Major’s Hill Park and it was a fantastic privilege to be able to share my story with members of our community. I spoke about my running, getting involved in para-sport, and just shared my experiences. A day of positivity and enthusiasm. A day of honor. The amazing staff from the Canadian Paralympic Committee were also there for support and encouragement.

I am truly blessed to have experienced a week like the one I have just described. As I train hard daily to achieve my goal of competing in the London 2012 Paralympics, I am reminded that there is so much more to being one of this country’s high performance athletes. I have the opportunity to be a role model and an educator. I have the opportunity to bring awareness and recognition to our para-athletes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sh5N403pJKc&feature=share

http://www.cbc.ca/islandmorning/episodes/2011/07/01/a-pei-paralympian-meets-the-royal-couple/

Shift in Momentum - Canadian National Track & Field Championships

I am grateful for all my problems. Sometimes you experience an emotion so deep you don't know how to express it. You feel it in every vein and in every ounce of your being, but you don't know quite how to validate it on the outside. This is how I felt on yesterday May 7th, 2011.

At an early hour the morning my guide Cody Boast, my friends from the Gee Gees (Erin, Ariane, Kate), and my new room mate Kara Stalfox were at my door. We were totally pumped for the morning. My idol, and current paralympic team mate Leah Robinson and her mother were at my house, along with my former boss and great friend, Alanna Millington. The morning was off to a great and positive start. To top it all off my former coach, and my biggest idol and mentor in running, Nathalie Cote showed up. At 8 weeks pregnant she ran a 20 minutes 5 km. What an amazing woman!!!

At Calvary Christian Academy we were met with bright eyes and bushy tails! The atmosphere of excitement and enthusiasm was in the air. Arriving at Calvary Christian Academy was nothing short of a hero's welcome. Signs and posters were plasted on the walls, Run Noella Run hats were for sale, and student's eager hellos made the smile lines on my face hurt!!

I chose to run with the students and that was the best decision I have ever made. I initially ran with a female student determined to break 23 minutes. She ran smooth and hard, and I am so proud that she did run her goal. As I went back for more runners, I saw goals being met, I saw determination, and I saw passion. I reached the finish line with so many different runners of all levels. I felt an extrodinary sense of happiness and pride. I am so proud of each and every individual that crossed that finish line. Amazing people, amazing stories. I am so very blessed to have been a part of this run.

Today, it wasn't about time, it wasn't about the place I finished. It was all about helping other people to achieve their goals, and I can't think of any bigger reward. It fills my heart with happiness to think of the day, and each and every individual that crossed the finish line. I wanted to "high five" every single person.

Sometimes the greatest victories are not what you as an individual accomplish, but what you help others to do. I can honestly say I love Calvary Christian Acadamy. I love Betsy (the former principal), all the staff and all the students. No word will ever rightfully express my gratitude to them.

To podium at London 2012 is a huge goal - and it feels so much more possible with the help of cummunities such as CCA.

Thank you.

Why I Run

Last weekend I attended a Para-Development Summit in Toronto. This system would provide the resources and information necessary for new athletes to integrate into our system.

On the Friday and Saturday, a meet/information session was held where people with disabilities could come out and try athletics. I met many young inspirational people. One particular participant was a young boy with Cerebral Palsy named Allan (name changed). Allan is 13 years old. He was extremely nervous about coming out. He was worried other kids would make fun of him and he was quite shy. I spent some time with Allan. I gently encouraged him to get involved and before I knew it Allan was fully participating. Allan was early on Saturday morning and he watched my workout. When it was time for Allan's session he asked me to run with him for his fitness testing. I ran with him, and even did the push ups he needed to do with him. He did 40 push ups. I was so proud of Allan!! Afterwards his mother came and thanked me for taking Allan under my wing. She told me Allan will definitely be out to some meets this summer.

The fact of the matter is that I should have thanked Allan. Seeing him succeed was the highlight of my week! Knowing he looks up to me, and that he is motivated to join our sport was the greatest reward ever. This is one reason I run - to help kids with disabilities become physically active. This is why I run.

Prior to attending this summit, I went to Calvary Christian Academy to talk to the students, and I was greeted with a hero's welcome. All the students lined the hall and clapped when I arrived. The gymnasium walls were covered in posters for me, and an array of cupcakes were arranged in my name. The kids told me how much I inspired them. They are going to train hard for the local fundraising 5 km because I have inspired them. All the students and staff there are amazing. I spoke of my experience at Worlds and they thanked me.

The truth of the matter is that I should have thanked them over and over and over. Those young kids inspire me everyday to continue with my sport. They motivate me to train hard and succeed. This school has stolen my heart - they are amazing. Knowing I have helped to inspire them to be active it an indescribable feeling - this is why I run.

I went to workout tonight, suffering from a lingering flu and cold. I wanted to give up so bad. I ran with my guide Cody Boast who encouraged and pushed me. I persevered. I thought of the Paralympic dream, and I not only finished my workout - I finished strong. This is why I run.

World Championships

It is with great excitement that I write this blog post from Christchurch New Zealand! I am less than a week away from the biggest competition of my life - the 2011 IPC World Championships. I will be competing in the 1500m and 400m.

As I reflect upon my running career since May of 2008, I acknowledge the commitment and hard work I have put forth. As a fairly new athlete, I am honoured to be representing my country at such an event.

Thank you to Canadian Athletes Now Fund, who's 2010 summer sponsorship helped to make this possible for me. Also thank you to my dear training group, friends, and coaches. I am so blessed to have such wonderful people supporting me and helping me in my journey.

I am ready for this, and I will do everything in my power to represent myself and Canada well!

I will keep everyone posted on my progress.

January 20 - CBC The National will be running a segment on my journey!

New Canadian Record

Last night was a Twilight Meet at Terry Fox Athletic Centre in Ottawa. I had decided to run the 800m. I was extremely nervous as this was only my second time running it this year, and I knew a few people would be there to cheer me on! I didn't want to disappoint!

I ran with guide Cody Boast. He was fantastic! We went out fairly strong. We had a bit of trouble getting around traffic, but eventually got positioning. Our first lap was strong and then we just tried to hold on for the second lap! We did, and it ended up being a great run. We broke the current Canadian record by over three seconds.

Thank you to everyone for cheering me on, especially those who showed up from my favorite school Calvary Christian Academy!

Apologies and Update

It has been two months since my last entry, and I apologize for that. I have a busy training, competition, and work schedule.

It has been a season of trials and tribulations so far! I have encountered a lot of both ups and downs.

My first major competition was US Nationals. My coach and I decided I would run the 200m and 1500m distances. The competition was held in Mirimar Florida, and the heat was overwhelming. Overall good results came out of the competition as I won gold in both my events.

I also started working with an alternate guide this year. Her name is Kate MacNaughton. Both her and Mia help guide me through my runs. I am fortunate to have such great girls.

I have also raced a few twilight meets in which I have run personal bests in the 1500m distances.

In July, I attended a camp and competition called Boiling Point. I had a good 1500m. I also placed first in the 400m and 100m distances (this was my first 100m this season). I came second in the 200m. This was my first loss on Canadian soil, but it was to a very deserving competitor.

The last weekend of July was Canadian Nationals Championship. I ended up racing the 800m, 200m, and 400m distances. I came into the competition very determined to win, and I was successful. I ended up running my 400m with Cody Boast, another guide for the Ottawa Lions. (Mia was sick). Cody was amazing!

I was fortunate this summer to receive my first sponsor - Canadian Athletes Now Fund. I also partnered with IRUN magazine, and am on the cover of the August issue!!

The greatest pleasure in life, is doing the things that people say we cannot do
Walter Bagehot

Season Opener

Well, alas, the season has begun! Race 1 was in Montreal and it consisted of a 1500m and a 400m race.
I was extremely nervous for the 1500m race, this was the first time I had run it since my blow up in Australia. I had to put the nerves aside and remember - this is what I have trained for. I have put all this hard work in - and the results would come. I need to be mentally tough. The 1500m is a very painful race, and the minute you let pain get into your head, the race is over. I chose two key words for the race - they were float and focus. Focus was a distraction to keep my mind form wondering, and float reemphasizes running relaxed. The race went well. We followed our plan to perfection. I had a surge of energy at the end and finished very strong. It was a 20 second personal best, and only 7 seconds off the Canadian record. The great news is that we learned a lot during this race. I had a lot of energy left at the end, which means I can probably pace out my laps a little better, and I can definitely run it faster!!
My 400m race was 6 hours later. After what seemed like an excruiating wait, it was finally time. Although a decent season opener time, it was not near my personal best. My legs were rusty from the 1500, and I have yet to do speed work this season! The results will come.
RUN LIKE HECK....... AND JUST GET THE AGONY OVER WITH!!!

Stronger than ever

My quadricep muscle has been healing nicely, and I have been able to get some really strong workouts in.

Monday was a double day. It was pulled at the top of the leg around the Rec fem area (sorry for the technical talk). It didn't hurt when I did light jogs, but the moment I would go into anything fast or an acceleration I would experience great pain. I was under the impression it was healing though.

The agreement for race day was that I was going to do my warm up and then see the team doctor prior to my race. I focused, and warmed up with intensity. I was in a mental state that I was ready to execute whatever challenge should be place before me. I was ready to win. 30 minutes before my race I checked in with the team doctor, and she did a quick strength test on my quad. Much to my absolute disgust - she pulled me from the race. I argued, I insisted I was fine, but to no prevail. I took the news hard. I shed a bubble or two, I just felt sooo ready.

The only saving grace is that this was not a sanctioned meet. What this means is that no matter what the result, it would not have counted for anything. Had I broke a Canadian record (which was my intent), it would not have counted. I have to look t it from the perspective, that I am saving myself for the meets that count!!

My coach Ray said, a little set back here and there is not a bad thing - this will prepare me for set backs that I may encounter on a bigger stage!

Watch out world - Noella is ready!!!

Lou Holtz:"Ability is what you are capable of doing. The importance of this camp is to kick off the season and get geared up for what promises to be and exciting and demanding year of running. We have 40 athletes here and a fantastic support team. (nutritionists, biomechanists, therapists, psychologists)

My workouts have been pretty intense so far. My physio has also been pretty intense due to a hip imbalance.......so yes.....I am soooo sore. Getting on and off the toilet takes a tremendous amount of effort. As the saying goes, no pain no gain.

We have a meet on Saturday. I will keep everyone posted as to how it goes.

"Running is the greatest metaphor for life, because you get out of it what you put into it." -Oprah Winfrey

A good race?

Well, I am home safe and sound. Australia was a valuable experience for me. I learned a lot about myself and the work I need to do to become more successful.

My mom called me yesterday and said to me "how did your final race go"? To which I replied " It was okay, it wasn't good or wasn't bad". Mom questioned "Well, what does that mean", I responded, "exactly what I said". To this Mom questioned again "well, what place did you come in"?

You see, until you get to World's or the Paralympics it is not placing that matters - it is improvements, lessons, and personal best times. You see, the fact of the matter is that the very first race I ran in Australia was a Para - Athletic meet. I was the first female para-athlete and the first visually impaired athlete across the line - but I did not count this race as a success. I ran a horrible time way off of my goal, and this race proved nothing except that I wasn't at my best (or even close to World contention). The last race I ran was an able bodied meet, and even though I came in second last I ran a respectable time. I had a great first lap and learned a valuable lesson for the second lap. I didn't run a personal best, but I ran a decent time. For this reason I called this race "neither good or bad". If life were only about where you placed, than we as athletes would never learn anything. I would rather run a personal best and place 5th, than bring home a gold with no competition running under my potential. (Unless at the Paralympics of course)

Running is hard. The most important thing is to keep seeing improvement.

Strength does not come from winning. I am a person a year and a half ago, who knew nothing of track - to an athlete striving to become one of the World's best.

This trip has taught me how difficult it can be to adjust to travel and different climates. It has also taught me that my body is not always going to perform the way I want it to. Sometimes my body needs to rest.

I am taking these lessons and making my self better.

Today I will step on the track for the final time here. There is an extreme heat warning. The coolest it will be today is 41 degrees Celsius. I will do my best. I will do what I can, and that is all that counts.

I will prosper

"The miracle isn't that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start." -John Bingham, running speaker and writer

Yesterday and today

Yesterday, my legs failed me, and I did not run times I had hoped for. I was very upset and hit quite a low.

I needed to put it all into perspective though. I am at the beginning of my season, I am across the world, in the middle of an intense training camp, and I need to be patient with my body.

The unfortunate part of being a track athlete is that you put in hours, days, months of training for very small gains. You train all year to perform for three minutes or so! What I need to remember is everyday I am getting better and better and the results will come!

On our off day today, we went to the mountains! It was beautiful and empowering. In fact, at Curves, we have often discussed how perfect it would be to have "Sven", our imaginary Swiss masseuse in.

I went for my massage yesterday, and walked into the massage room and Brad was waiting. (Handsome, yes..... but not as handsome as my Derek) I laid on the table and allowed myself to relax. Brad starts to work, and I feel his bone crashing elbows come pounding down onto my back. Now, I know I said I wanted a deep massage, but wow.........psycho!! lol.

I spent the longest 40 minutes of my life feeling bones crack and muscles scream. Brad continuously tried to occupy me in conversation, but my inability to speak without shouting profound words made me unable to communicate with him. Yikes.

Granted, I feel better today and my hips are more aligned, but the colorful array of bruises around my hip flexors and quads makes me ponder " was this massage too deep"

So ladies if you dream of a foreign massage I am going to pop your bubble!! POP. As, I crawl into my bed tonight, and my muscles throb please believe -it is not all that you may think. Brad, Sven, Mario, or whoever it may be - may have elbows and knuckles of steel :)

On a more serious note - training is going very well. I have a competition on Tuesday, and am looking forward to it!!!

Poor Mia

This entry will be a little descriptive. Rated PG13. lol!!!

The realities of guide running can to an abrupt realization today.................

Well Mia, my guide, had to go well above the call of duty at yesterday's practise. We arrived at the track to do our workout and shortly after our warm up we were approached by an official of the Australian government for a drug test. The test was a random test mandated by CCES (Canadian Council for Ethics in Sport). As a visually impaired runner, I am to have a chaperone with me - poor Mia.

The lady conducting the test sat and watched us, as we continued through our workout until I was ready to urinate. The kind lady was very "by the book". After filling out many sheets of paperwork, I was given my cup and we were off to the bathroom! The tester was very strict. She insisted that I have no clothing between my chest and my knees. She was also very insistent that I was positioned on the toilet in a manner that she could see the urine leave my body. Wow. Stage fright. Talk about an uncomfortable situation. Mia had to be witness to the entire event. Poor Mia.

Once the sample was collected it had to be dispersed between two glass bottles. That is when Mia had to take over and pour my pee into the two bottles - poor Mia!! It was a learning experience for her anyways.

They say it is important for a runner and her guide to be close, but I think this may be pushing the limits!!

A quick update

I just wanted to post a quick update to say hello.

The weather has been extremely hot lately. There was actually a heat warning for this part of Australia. Today there has been a little break. The skies are overcast and there is a cool breeze.

Yesterday was our off day. We have trained everyday since our plane touched down, so it was a well deserved break. Mia and I decided to go to Manly Beach and try surfing. Mia did a great job. The extent off my surfing was limited to water up to my ankles. We are going back next week and I will give it more of a fair shot. I was a little intimidated by the shark attack that happened last week on the Australian shores!

Today we are focusing on speed. We will work on our block techniques, and then run smaller intervals full out! The purpose of these workouts are to develop fast twitch muscles. I only do speed workouts once a week now, as my focus has switched to longer distances. It is important to incorporate all aspects into your training program though.

I am staying focused on my goals. The sky is the limit.

Develop the winning edge; small differences in your performance can lead to large differences in your results.-- Brian Tracy

Better Today

Well, after my first decent night's sleep, I have woke up with new perspective. I am putting the events of yesterday behind me and moving forward.

As an athlete, whenever you have a poor performance it is hard not to get disheartened. On the other side of that coin, if I learned even one thing from the race, it was a success. I learned a lot from my poor performance, and know what I have to do to make a difference in the future!

As I step foot on the track today, I realize today is a new day! My training today will impact the rest of my career and I just have to put my heart and soul into every training session. Everyday my sneaker or spike touches that track, it is a step towards the podium in London 2012!

Watch out world - here comes Noella Klawitter

Had a Bad Day

So, on my second night here, my body decides it would be appropriate to wake up at 3:30 am. This presented a huge problem considering I had a 1500m race today.

I decided to get up, as laying in bed was pure torture. By 9:00 am this morning it was 31 degrees, by 11:30 am at my race time it was surpassing 37 degrees. There is a heat alert out right now for Southern Aussie.

Anyways, to get to the point everyone is waiting for, I bombed my race. I ran the poorest I have in a long time. I was 40 seconds off my goal. I took this result very hard. I am upset, angry, and disappointed with myself. I feel as though I have let myself, and everyone else down.

This is track though. It is a tough sport, and just like our dear Ottawa Senators, I am going to have a bad day here and there. Now, I need to pick my self up, dust myself off, and kick some Aussie butt!!

My next competition is on the 19th, and I intend to bring home some records! I have a lot of training time between now and then!

I will keep you posted on how training is going.

Now, off to lift weights.

Safe in Sydney

So, after a journey that lasted over 27 hours, I have arrived safe and sound in Sydney Australia. It was an incredibly long journey. I have a bit of motion sickness now, I feel a like I am still in the air!!

We are staying in a very nice hotel at Sydney Olympic Park! The facilities here seem amazing and I am anxious to explore them!

I am going to depart on a 30 minute run soon with my guide Mia. Our goal is to stay awake till 8pm this evening in an attempt to get accustomed to "Aussie Time".

My first competition is on January 10th now. Originally it was set for the 9th (which is tomorrow), but I have been fortunate enough to have it moved to the 10th. I will compete in the 1500m . (yikes)

Off for my run to stay awake. I miss everyone very much already, and will update you again soon.

Signing out,
a very tired Noella

Video's from my friend Rachel

I just wanted to share a recapof my 2009 season with two videos made by my friend Rachel.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i40CowEouWM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_fDL07L2ZI&feature=related

Thanks Rachel!

Welcome to my blog

Hello all,

I have created this blog in an attempt to stay in touch with all my family, friends, and members, as I enter into the 2010 running season. A lot needs to be accomplished this year as the qualifying period for World's ends at the end of August, and I do not yet have the 'A' standard. Currently I hold the 'B' standard in the 400m. My best shot for 'A' standard will be in the 400m or 1500m events. I will be moving away from the sprints.

I am one week away from embarking upon my first journey of 2010. I will be attending and competing at a training camp in Sydney Australia. My new guide Mia St. Aubin will be accompanying me for the long voyage. Unfortunately my guide dog, Zeke, and wonderful husband Derek will be left at home. We depart from Ottawa on January 6th, and will endure a 26 hour travel period. We arrive in Sydney on January 8th, and our first competitions are the 9th and 10th. Hopefully my Christmas indulgences, still won't be affecting my performances (let a lone the jet lag).

I hope to update this blog every couple of days while I am in Australia!

GO CANADA GO!
